I have, on a few occasions now, become disillusioned with the MUD. With all of the crashes, many of which seemed to be deliberately done by players, and the general attitude about everything, I felt very disillusioned recently, which led to me disappearing for a while. Whilst I was hoping to see many wonderful things to convince me to return to more active involvement, instead I was faced with a situation where invisible control characters had deleted player files, crashed the MUD for a week, we go back to April with code, everyone is upset, and, on top of that, I can't do a thing to fix it due to the invisible nature of the control characters and the fact that I am on a Windows machine, not Linux.

All of this makes me feel like quitting. Right now, I am looking at giving long-term imms access to the code, which is related to this. I already gave Reki access and plan to also give Raichek access. I would for Dresq too, except that he has disappeared. My main reason not to do it previously was concerns over security. Those concerns are outweighed by the problems that it causes by not having a backup.

The lease runs until February 2010, although I may have my dates wrong (I paid for 1 month first then a year) so it may be March 2010 or even April 2010. When the lease runs out, I will look at whether or not I want to continue on with this. If I don't, then I will shut it down then and not renew it.

If I do decide to shut it down, well, I don't want all of this work to go to waste, and, as such, I will be happy to give the code to someone else if they want to continue on with it. If they want to call it "World of Naruto 2" or "World of Naruto: Shippuuden" or still call it "World of Naruto", then that is up to them. They could call it something else too if they preferred. There are only 2 things that I ask if doing that - in the login screen credits, it should say (c) 2008-2009 Ichike and I would like to have one imm-ranked character (called Ichike) reserved for me. It can be a low-ranked imm, just for building and tweaking things, just so that I am still a bit involved in the whole thing.

I could also have the code available for public download.

If doing that, I won't have the player files available for public download, for privacy reasons. If someone wants to use the same player files, then I could send that to them separately, once the MUD is already set up.

My original plans for this were rather grand and I haven't managed to do anywhere near as much as I had planned. My original plans were to have it all finished in a year, or 2 years tops, but I slowed down at some point, got bogged down, had other things going on and lost faith a number of times. There is still much more that could be done, and perhaps, in a lot of ways, a new vision would be a good thing.

If I did shut it down, new people would be under no obligation to do things my way, or to continue on with any of my ideas at all. It'd be theirs, however they were.

Obviously, if I did shut it down, first dibs for who get the code would go to long-term trusted players and imms.
