Okay, here is the skinny on it.

About 10 August, for reasons unknown, about 10 players, including Ruyoku and the imm Raichek, had their accounts wiped, such that they were level 1 with no equipment, no skills, and no password (people could login as them just by hitting enter).

Probably related to that, within a day of the 10-player player wipes, the MUD crashed in a permanent fashion, knocking out the auto startup scripts that we have for when the MUD crashes, something that has never happened before. Once again, I have no idea how this happened.

In trying to restore Ruyoku's account to the last known backup, as a basis for his new character, I accidentally deleted the entire MUD. I did have a backup but it was from before I created the level 110 skills, back to 3 April 09, as that was the last stable version of the code (the level 110 skills were never bug-free). All players were either wiped or else lost 4 1/2 months of work. All work done by imms on zones (including mobs, areas, mob programs and items) are wiped back to 4 1/2 months ago. The level 110 skills, that took me over 1 month to write, is gone, although I do have my handwritten notes on how I did it.

I did explain how this happened on the MUD, but, to be simple, it is because linux only displays a part of the directory path.

I thought I was in:
H:/wonmud/backup/game/files

I was actually in:
H:/wonmud/game/files

I was trying to delete the backup of the files that I had to open in order to restore Ruyoku's account. I must have mistyped "cd backup" and it didn't change directories when I thought it was, so that when I typed in "rm *" it wiped live files instead of backup files.

I had to wipe the backup files to save space.

I had to open it like that because otherwise Ruyoku's file would get corrupted with Windows control characters.

Good aspects of this:

* We don't have the buggy level 110 skills (especially puppets).
* All players were equally harmed, rather than just the 10 who got their player files deleted.

Obviously, it is mostly bad.

The lease on the site runs until February 2010. At that point in time, I will consider whether I want to keep running the MUD. At this point, my answer would be no, but there is still time until then. If I decide not to keep running it, I will either give the code to one person who desires to keep running it or else I will put the code up on the web site (or elsewhere) for free download for anyone.

If someone does want to run it, I would suggest the following:

- In the credits, it should say "(c) Ichike 2008-2009" and then your names after that.
- I would like 1 imm-level account on the MUD named Ichike, although it doesn't have to be top imm level. I wouldn't actually necessarily want to be involved, it is more just as an honorary thing.

Whoever runs it could call it "World of Naruto" or even something based on that, like "World of Naruto 2" or "World of Naruto: Shippuuden" or another name entirely.

Anyway, I did write some code which should stop some of the bugs and we will see how we go with everything else.
